Shirodhara comes from two Sanskrit words, Shiro or the head and Dhara, i.e. to flow. Thus Shirodhara treatment involves pouring specific liquids over the forehead, depending on the condition being treated.
Shirodhara includes Medicated Oil, Quath, Buttermilk, Milk etc. Sesame oil with selected herbs remove water. Things completely depend on the Doshas being targeted for treatment.
The most common Doshas that Shirodhara treatment addresses are Vata and Pitta. Vata imbalance usually leads to unexplained fears and anxiety. Pitta imbalance leads to a constant state of anger and frustration.
In addition to the obvious relaxation imparted by Shirodhara, it can possibly treat a number of different medical conditions including but not limited to sinusitis, tinnitus, insomnia, premature greying of hair, high blood pressure, hearing impairment, a number of different neurological disorders, as well as skin diseases such as psoriasis.
Further, Shirodhara assists incrementally with various psychological and lifestyle related issues such as poor memory, inability to concentrate, chronic depression, persistent fear, unexplained stress, as well as any other form of mental tension.
Administering Shirodhara treatment typically involves lying back on a massage table with the eyes closed. Specially prepared liquid such as herbal oil or any other item in conjunction with the Dosha being addressed is gradually poured directly onto the forehead as a continuously flowing stream.
